Huntsman has always had the best chance of beating Obama and the Republicans are doofuses for either:
A) not seeing that, or
B) choosing to ignore it in favor of getting a more conservative lunatic in office.
Beating an incumbent is pretty damn hard. Take whatever you can get, dummies.
